Either way she first is mentioned, if I remember correctly, during sort of a daydream of Sam's towards the end of ROTK and then we finally "meet" her during the scouring of the shire. In this case, though it came at the very end of the book, it was a case of Tolkien showing and not telling. These types of propriety would have been understood by Tolkien and though that's not to say that there was no chance of this leading to a conversation - for the most part Sam was there to see Frodo's mission through, not tell Frodo his life story, which considering how small the Shire is and the fact Sam and his Dad were already employed by the Baggins' estate he likely would have already know something of it and wouldn't have needed to be brought up. He wasn't really there to be friends with the commissioned officer, loyal and obedient yes, but not familiar. Which was an enlisted soldier assigned to assist a commissioned officer with day to day tasks, shining shoes, doing laundry, fetching food and what not.
Sam is often referred to as being based on the "batmen" of WWI. This could be a question of class here more than anything else. Frankly, if anything, Tolkien's writings are conspicuously sexless. But I don't think there is any actual reason to think it was Tolkien's intent. Much of these retrospective rereadings of his work are fine as an exercise in speculation, and it's easy enough to read some sexual subtext into some moments of The Lord of the Rings, from a 21st century perspective. Now, I suppose it's a matter for historians, but think it's unlikely there was any homosexual subtext based on what I know of Tolkien himself- a devout Catholic and conservative Englishman of the early 20th Century. We do know that his four hobbit characters were inspired by himself and the 3 close friends he had in his youth. Today that kind of behavior is exceedingly unusual for men outside of a romantic relationship, but that's because of the ways our current society has defined behavior.įinally, I am sure if Tolkien had written the relationship with a romantic intent, there would be some evidence in the reams of correspondence he wrote about his novels with his friends. It was normal in the early part of the 20th century, and still today in some parts of the world, for grown male friends to walk holding hand in hand, for example.
